2020/1114/1700 — Wetlands wagtails

Another afternoon ride with a slight variation through the suburban streets, but down to the Glen Iris wetlands to sit for a while and watch the three Willy wagtail[1] chicks in their nest and a parent flitting back and forth, constantly hunting insects and bringing them back to feed the young. Suddenly noticed a bird directly across the water from me ruffle its wings and settle back into immobility -- there was a Nankeen night-heron[2] standing there the entire time, unmoving, hidden in plain sight in the dappled shadows standing on a branch above the reeds. They're one of the birds listed on the information plaques in the bird hide and I always have a half-hearted look around, but they seem to be very hard to spot and I've never seen one over that side of the wetlands. I'm amused at the number of new (to me) species I keep seeing down here, during the COVID-19 lockdown when we had to stay within 5km of home I'd joined in the local birding challenge[3], but now I keep noticing new birds in the same spot
