Announcing the Lasso Read-it-Later Service

November 5, 2022

lasso.nytpu.com (only on Gemini, no web mirror)

I'm announcing the release of my new service for Gemini, Lasso! It's a bookmarking service oriented akin to Wallabag or Pocket; that's oriented towards bookmarking articles, gemlog posts, and other primarily written material (perfect for Gemini!). It also archives bookmarked articles to help mitigate link rot—I know for me personally, there's many a time I'm trying to re-read some interesting gemlog post from a few months back and I find that it was deleted forever.

The Lasso instance I'm hosting (linked above) is open for public signups right now, or you can host your own instance with the source code and documentation linked here:

https://git.sr.ht/~nytpu/lasso/

Afterword

Lasso is written almost exclusively targeting what I personally am looking for in a service like this, and similarly the UI is primarily guided by what I personally thought seemed sensible. However, I'm open to any suggestions and comments on how it could be improved or extra features you think it needs.

Especially at this early point I'm very open to feature requests I feel improve the experience and usability of Lasso. I reserve the right to just say no to features I feel are out of scope—I've already vetoed someone's suggestion to be able to recursively archive pages, such as archiving all posts on a gemlog index and such—which is a good idea! Just not in-scope for what Lasso is intended for.

Documentation improvements, bugfixes, new features, or any other form of contributions are very, very welcome as well! Although when implementing new features you should check with me before getting started becuase I'd hate to not make use of your hard work if I don't feel the feature is a good fit :(

Naturally you can contact me at any of the multitude of contact methods I link regularly.

Such as on my about page or the terms of service page on the Lasso instance
