Void Linux on old hardware

Like I've mentioned in my last post, my main computer is now an old Asus Eee PC. I've used Arch Linux on it, and it ran decently, no issues whatsoever. I wanted to dabble into Void, as I've used it before, and was curious of the performance aspects as it runs on runit and musl.

Performance

The booting time with runit is much faster than with systemd. I usually waited around 30 seconds on Arch for it to boot, here on Void it's 8 seconds at maximum. The systemd bloat is really felt on old hardware. On newer hardware, there's barely any difference.

Package manager

Xbps is really great, much faster than even Pacman in some aspects. I'm still getting used to the syntax. It has all the packages I use.

Package naming

Coming from Arch, the naming is a bit weird, for example Fira Code on Arch is "ttf-fira-code" and here it is "font-firacode". I guess it's a bit more logical.

Documentation

Void has lacking documentation in many aspects, for example an encrypted installation. Even if it is on their wiki, it still doesn't explain many aspects and tweaks you must make.

Overall I like Void, it runs great on old hardware, the battery does just fine, and it's blazing fast.
