I continue to amuse myself by finding ways to play games over gemini, abuse of the protocol though this arguably is. Abstract strategy games and interactive fiction were too easy targets, so for a challenge I decided to try a real-time action game. Thanks to gemtext streaming, this is narrowly possible. Here's what I came up with, a backwards ski race down a perlin-noisy slope, inspired by the unix classic 'ski' and uninventively entitled 'Gemski'.
This requires a client which supports streaming gemtext, i.e. displaying each line as soon as it is received. Sadly, few do; the only clients I know to do so are Lagrange and Diohsc. Please tell me if you can add to this list. Diohsc has the annoyance that you have to ^C once or twice before being able to select the input link. Lagrange had a bug which caused intermittent problems with streaming on some platforms, but skyjake kindly fixed this for the latest release v1.16.7. So I recommend playing in latest Lagrange, using alt-1 to select the "turn" link. Enjoy!
