The Menai Strait is a narrow stretch of tidal water off the coast of Wales. It separates the island of Anglesea from Mainland Wales.
In 1664 a ship sank there, with 80 passengers lost to the sea. One man survived. Hugh Williams.
In 1785 another shipwreck occurred there. This time 60 passengers were lost. All but one of the passengers. His name was Hugh Williams.
In 1820 a 3rd ship was lost there. 25 people died in the sea, one survived. Hugh Williams.
Onward to 1940, a British trawler is destroyed by a German mine – 2 men survive, a man and his nephew – they were both called Hugh Williams.
Well, what an amazing coincidence!
Or is it?
Hugh Williams is a very common Welsh name. And there were more than just those few ships lost in that stretch of water in that time frame. It's a very treacherous place.
Many, many ships where Hugh Williams wasn't a survivor, let alone the only survivor shows that sherry picking details can make an amazing coincidence seem to have happened.
