I just found out about the "Dial-a-Disc" service that the GPO ran. You dialled "16" on your phone and you would hear a pop song. It was different every day. It ran from the 60's until the early 90's.
The General Post Office (GPO) was a government department, it became responsible for all telecommunications in 1912, except in Hull, taking over from the National Telephone Company. In 1846 the Electric Telegraph Company, the world's first public telegraph company, developed a nationwide communications network. In 1969 the GPO became a public corporation. The British Telecom brand was introduced in 1980, and became independent of the Post Office in 1981, and privatised in 1984.
