2023 mid year update

Posted on 2023-07-06

It has been some time since I wrote here or on my blog and truth be told I want to change that. But at the same time, the first half of the year was busy, both with work and life. Moving away from Paris took time and (too) many trips to finalize. After 3 months, we're finally settling nicely :). I'm currently sitting in a spot I don't often use in our new apartment writing this post on a (very) old laptop. This is part of a new experiment I'm doing to see if I can train my brain to be focus on writing on specific setup. More on this later if that experiment is worth sharing.

The move also made me do some (more or less) temporary changes on my homelab, as I explained in a [previous gemlog entry]. I first decided which selfhosted services where mandatory to be online during the move (eg: rss feed reader, blog, capsule, …) and migrated them to someone else computer (aka the cloud). Other services where shutdown, including of course all domotics related stuff.

For about a month now, I have rebuilt my selfhosted homelab setup (no domotics / home automation yet). Instead of just re-plugging everything like before, I decided to redo everything (because it's fun!) and this time used proxmox (because I wanted to learn) to manage my "home datacenter". I'm going to write a lot on my blog about this in the near future as I really enjoy tweaking my new setup.

I have multiple ideas of topic for my blog that I want to write about like:

As for gemini, even though I haven't write much here since my humble and not important point of view about geminispace (now called bbs), I've been reading daily my favorite capsules and even followed bbs activities (via my own feed reader too, which is awesome). I haven't participated much yet though. Also, the certificate I used for station (first user certificate I created on gemini) has now expired and I haven't created a new one yet… So I haven't looked at anything written there for the past 2 month now. I want to write a bit more on my capsule though, as it is usually a nice change from the more technical post I write on my blog. I want to be able to write about more non technical subject here.

After a discussion on bbs, I do have some ideas for improving [tinylog] usage, one of them being a rewrite of the TUI of the existing app to something better; the other one being a online capsule that would allow people to subscribe to the feeds they chose too and have a tinylog client within their gemini browser. That shouldn't be difficult but it isn't at the top of my todolist yet (but that's because this todolist is way too long and forever growing).

Speaking of development, I would like to add a few improvements to [walgot], my TUI [wallabag] client as it is close to a v1. That as well would require time and motivation that I need to find… Some day I wish I knew @skyjake's secret to be so productive :).

As said at the beginning of this post, this is my first time writing a post on a dedicated (very) old laptop (from 2010) on a dedicated (at least for now) space. I'll write more about it later but this is supposed to be a distraction `free ` /less/ machine to focus on writing or coding (the coding part isn't configured yet). My goal is to force myself to sit there 1h per day at least 3 days during the week and 2h once during the week end. Of course <real life> will have an impact on this goal but we'll see. Maybe that way I can "force" myself being more productive. That being said, I won't be to harsh on myself, because I consider other things productive too that wouldn't happen on this machine: selfhosting management (updates or adding/configuring services), reading or others…

Well, that's not the first time I'm trying something like this, but hopefully this time will be a bit better than last :).
