It has been about a month of de-spotifying and I wanted to give a quick update on my progress.
De-spotifying has changed my relationship to listening to music. When I used Spotify, I was constantly flipping from one song to another, messing with the queue, and just generally flying all over the app. Now, without the limitless Spotify library to pick through, I've been listening to the radio, specifically stations on SomaFM, a lot more. I've transitioned to a "set it and forget it" music listening approach, and it's been great!
Another difference I noted was that I was looking at my phone less while listening to music just because I wasn't scrolling and searching through Spotify anymore. I'm always looking to reduce screen time so any change that helps in that is a huge positive for me.
Something else I noticed was that I stopped caring about "having" every song I liked in my library to come back to. I am learning to be OK with listening to a song, enjoying it, and moving on. Sometimes I'll screenshot the name of a song to check for later on Bandcamp, but at that point I would then have to make a conscious decision to purchase the song or album with real money. So far I don't think I've actually bought a song that I've screenshot while listening to SomaFM, and I'm totally good with that.
As I continue adapting to my new Spotify-free life, my set-up is probably going to keep changing. However, I figured I would break down what I'm using at the moment to listen to, buy, and save my music.
SomaFM: I love SomaFM. They have so many cool stations, and they've got an app you can use to browse and save the ones you like.
Bandcamp: I've been buying all my new music on Bandcamp if it's available on the platform. I really like using Bandcamp Radio and the written Features on their website to discover new music as well.
Navidrome: I set up Navidrome on my home server to stream the music I've bought off Bandcamp. I'm using yunohost so installation was super simple. It's clean and easy to use, and you can connect it to any Subsonic compatible music app (I'm currently using Ultrasonic downloaded from F-Droid).
