Old Computer Challenge 2023 - Day Six

Display

Today, I did have to boot the R31 four times, before I got a readable, not-very-dark display.

The fourth time it went OK, I can now read the screen effortless.

Text only ActivityPub

Some weeks before the Challenge, I switched from Pleroma to Honk as my ActivityPub server. Honk is written in Go, uses SQLite as database and is almost Javascript-free.

Today at opening Honk I added the "-g" switch to links, so I get a browser that display graphics. I also had Emacs running ERC, the IRC-client that is build into Emacs. The machine became very slow and even after closing links, it still uses 120Mb of swapspace.

So, although a lot of posts contain some graphics, I will stick to a text only format for going through my time line for the remainder of the Challenge.

Old Computer Challenge Community

The Old Computer Challenge IRC-channel was opened at the time of the first edition of the challenge. Not everybody left after that first challenge, and over the last two years a small (smol) community formed, and I do enjoy being part of it.

This year there are a lot of new people joining the IRC-channel. I hope that many will stay on the channel so the community will grow a bit.

People come and go. Probably there is some kind of critical size, and the number of people should a least be a bit above that threshold, for the long term of viability of the community.
