As I let my mind wander to the past today, I recalled talking with friends who were in AiS and others who were not but nonetheless computer saavy and as eager as I was to learn. Linux was popular, both for connecting to our Unix accounts from home, but also calling BBSs! We used `minicom`. We had a group. A user group! We talked about programs, we talked about cool BBSs we found. Local computing lore made it to us as we played. Someone found a way to get free dialup through the college in the city I lived in. A friend of a friend of a friend sort of thing. The exploit was in a deep menu and you had to type some special commands. I come from a poor upbringing. We didn't have money for dialup then. Having free dialup was glorious and enabled me to dive headlong into the days of being a user in the Unix world.
