After my first zoom class today I spent some time exploring alternatives to the modern web. I dug around a bit for information on the gopher protocol.

I was surprised by the depth and richness of what is still out there.

Here's what I found:-

people are still setting up and using the gopher protocol, I found some phlogs written as recently as today!
a Firefox browser extension that enables you to surf the gophersphere
an obscure 18th century composer named Francessco Zappa, who Frank Zappa recorded in 1984, no relation apparently
a lightweight responsive keyboard driven browser called, qutebrowser, it's performance and speed have me hooked even if I have to type the uri in directly

So all in all a pretty geeky kind of day.

So much so wrote a bit about it on my blog too.
