A Change of Flights

2022-09-30

---

Today I am returning home from a visit to the company office. My scheduled flight was to have one connection, but the first flight was delayed, leaving me too little time to make the connection.

To my surprise, the terminal agents knew this ahead of time and informed me at the check-in counter, before I even passed through security. The news was certainly unwelcome, but I was impressed that they could calculate my missed connection so early, and that they wouldn't risk me being stranded in the airport without a definitive route home.

I was given two options: fly to the original connection anyway and stay at a hotel overnight, or take a taxi to an airport about two hours away and fly from there. I have visited the connection city before and do enjoy visiting it, but after all the travel I've done in the last ten days, I think I just want to be home.

The agents had to double-check the arrangements and confirm that the delay was not due to weather. If it was, I would not qualify for a taxi voucher, though my flight would still be rebooked at no charge. Despite my desire to sleep in my own bed tonight, I decided that if I did not qualify, I would fly to the connection city anyway, since the airline was required to pay for my room fee. Luckily, it turned out that I did qualify for the voucher. I took the taxi.

My new flight is direct, so as long as it leaves tonight, I am guaranteed to get home tonight. I've already received word that it's been delayed by half an hour, so the premise that it will leave tonight is uncertain. Were I stuck somewhere for another night, I'd much rather it be the connecting flight's city than here.

No matter what happens, however, I'll try to take it in stride. The airlines are trying their best. They really don't want to leave passengers stranded. And I'm glad I was warned about my connection.
