I just realized today that as of this month it's been a year since I've replaced (nearly) every piece of software in my life with some free alternative. My computers all run Linux with minimal proprietary software (my laptop even runs coreboot), I replaced the smart TVs with little RaspberryPi/LibreELEC systems, and I run a custom FOSS OS (LineageOS) on a de-googled phone.
It doesn't fix everything. Of course, you know, we're all humans with human struggles and problems in our lives. But it is one less thing to worry about. It feels good.
Of course, I make the near-universal exceptions for Steam and my Nintendo Switch, lol.
P.S. I'm looking for a new place to host my Gemini capsule if anyone has any suggestions!
For Gemini, why not self-host? Get a little dedicated pi for it, make a project out of it!
I recently downgraded my LOS 20 device on (6 year old!) my a3xelte, to a more stable LOS 18.1 device.
I thought going for the more modern ROM was always going to be better, but I realise that sometimes having a stable device is just beauty in itself. The difference has been night and day, and from now on I will never try an experimental release as a daily driver unless I have no other choice.
That's a lot of work! Nice job. I keep considering the de-googled phones but run away. How is Lineage treating you?
Congrats! I know how much work that is. The best feeling is when you open up your self-hosted platforms to friends and family to help save others from Big Tech™.
Looking forward to the day I can delete my Gyougle account.
