Minimalist Challenges

I try my best to lead as minimal a lifestyle as possible, which I doubt will be seen as unusual by many people here considering the text-heavy interface we're all choosing to utilize. I feel like I already have just about everything that I need. I don't want to support capitalism and consumer culture, so I try my best not to. However, I have run into a couple of areas which this is more difficult for me.

Tech Gadgets

This one I actually think I've done a pretty good job of resisting, but that doesn't mean it's easy. When I was growing up I pictured myself in a Neuromancer/Shadowrun future someday, my walls dripping with cabling, cyberdecks, and gadgetry. Now that we're here in the future and that type of decor is completely possible, some sort of cyber-hoarding impulse still slips into my head now and then. But honestly I've resisted this urge fairly well over the last decade or so. Patting myself on the back here. However, there's one other item that's far more difficult for me to stay away from...

Books (Especially Witchy Books)

I still read a ton and always will, but I've tried as hard as I can to transition to purchasing my books digitally rather than physically to prevent ruining my minimalist goals. However, one of my favorite activities is browsing around used bookstores, searching for forgotten tomes and excellent bargains on subjects I've wanted to read about. It doesn't help that used books are still generally cheaper than their digital counterparts...

For the most part, I do an ok job resisting buying physical books unless I find something really exceptional. Books on witchcraft topics however are something a bit different! Often they come with images and diagrams which just don't reproduce well on a Kindle screen. Also, it feels so nice to have a collection of pretty magical books just sitting there on the shelf, so fun to just reach out and browse for a topic. This is an area where I still haven't found a good way to trick myself into keeping things digital. I'm trying my best though.

I have done a pretty good job saving my money, only buying things that would improve my quality of life physically. However I saw a piece of limited run fractal artwork on etsy a few days ago and just HAD TO HAVE IT! Sometimes you have to treat yourself a little to something you truly want especially if you make enough money to have spending room.

I've been using libraries for the most part over the past few years for books, but it's still nice to have a collection of ones that you find to be very special and inspiring. And of course books on certain topics can be hard to find in libraries.
