I've been fascinated with bonsai but have been too afraid to try, due to my propensity to kill plants. My husband also wanted to give it a try, so we decided to do it together. We want to cultivate bonsai from nursery stock.
For our first try, we decided to go tough, so we started off with bougainvilleas. They are currently doing okay, even after dropping all their leaves at some point.
Next, I want to try native bonsai. I came across a lovely grevillea crithmifolia in a nursery and rescued it, it had a beautiful trunk structure. I kept it in a pot and it thrived, so I thought it would be ready for a bonsai pot. I trimmed the roots and put it in a bonsai pot. I also pruned it back a little. Unfortunately, it died a few weeks after that treatment.
I decided to go back to the "tough" plants and decided on some peppermint (agonis flexuosa). I found some tubestock at Bunnings, for a normal version and a dwarf version. I repotted them in a plastic pot but only filled halfway, as a "training pot". They're currently doing okay and growing well. Fingers crossed!
