Today I learned practically half of the 7.9 billion people on this planet are fed by synthetic fertilizer agriculture. I'm not sure whether this is more or less than I would have guessed.
Ever more synthetic fertilizer is required to counteract the yield losses attendant to erosion. This is not sustainable.
I also read some more of "Empire of Cotton", which continues to impress with its sheer scope.
