💬 Bubble is a Gemini bulletin board system with many influences from Station, Reddit, WordPress, and issue trackers like GitHub Issues.
Bubble v6.0: Atom Feeds, Expanded Help — This Bubble feature update is a smaller one as we're still in the summer vacation period, but there are a couple of useful additions. Atom Feeds You can now get an Atom feed of All Posts, subspaces, user feeds, issue tracker feeds, and tag-filtered feeds. In other words, everything that was available as a Gemini feed can now also be accessed as an Atom feed. These new feeds contain the...

i see the comments are in the 'newest first' order. today i continued my post with comments, and i see the first comment is a continuation of a second. people usually scroll from up to down, so i guess the default way of having up to down comments chronologically would be better. otherwise they need to read the post, then go down, then gradually navigate upwards. also i can imagine that the click on the arrow which shows order of comments(it is upward now, and i cannot find the way to change...

tip for those who would like to post photos to bubble on their android phone: the app 'imagepipe' both strips all metadata for privacy and also has a image quality/compression slider to easily find a balance between resolution and the 100kb cap

Pseudo Federation Idea — An idea popped into my head regarding Bubble and "federation". I think it was discussed previously that making the Bubble software federate with other instances would add too much code and complexity. My idea is a kind of pseudo federation. I'm thinking on a user level you could combine posts from multiple subspaces into one feed. But instead of just multiple subspaces from the same instance, it could be posts from a different instance's subspace. More specifically,...

A random Bubble tip I've been intending to mention: user and subspace names are case-insensitive but case-preserving. This means you can change the capitalization of your names without breaking any links. For example: /u/SKYJAKE User accounts can be renamed in Settings and subspaces can be renamed on the subspace admin page.

Updated to Bubble v5.1: Revised layout of the comment view: consistent metadata presentation compared to a top-level post; begin with a "Re:" link; "Original Post" is always shown at the bottom. Comment view shows per-post notifications. Fixed: Only show later Git commits in a "Later Comments" thread. Fixed: Search results linking to issues used the wrong ID number.

I usually use the Subspaces list as start page, I wonder if it would be useful to have an activity indicator or a count of posts on each Subspace

Bubble v5.0: Comment View, Index of Posts, Time Zones, Certificate Recovery — Bubble version 5 introduces several new features. Some improve basic usability and some are smaller things that have been missing from the start. All of these have been informed by the experience of using BBS over the past weeks. Viewing an Individual Comment Comments are not meant to be tightly bound to their parent posts. Internally, a comment is equivalent to a regular top-level post except that it also has a...

Gemini email — I think the most brilliant part of Bubble is in the Gemtext interface (UI): it's well engineered and the ability to compose drafts that can be edited later is a big step towards fully operational Gemini services. I can't imagine why an online banking couldn't be run with the same approach. That said... Is there any purely technical barrier to the creation of a Bubble-based (or Bubble-inspired) Gemini email interface, that is a webmail subsistute? I know that many Geminauts prefer...

BBS has been updated to Bubble v4.3. Polls weren't being tagged appropriately, causing them to appear as regular posts and not be notified about. Fixed paging in the issue tracker (couldn't change page in closed issues). I am now running bbs.geminispace.org and skyjake.fi on GmCapsule v0.5. This new version of the server enables live reloading of extensions so I can upgrade Bubble without shutting down the server. Another enhancement is that there are additional background processes for...

I find myself with several notifications, often in the same subspace. I read through the subspace, but still have remaining notifications and have to clear them by hand...

BBS has been updated to Bubble v4.2: Added Snowflake avatar. Improved tag editor: use correct terms ("post" or "issue") and removed redundancy in the UI. Issue trackers display the number of issues in the top heading. Fixed draft undercounting in the dashboard link (comment and issue tracker drafts were not included). Moved tagging actions to the moderator group under post actions, for clarity. Minor page formatting tweaks.

More thoughts on editing — I went to communitywiki.org today and saw that they also had raw pages. Then I came back here and saw @stack's post about editing workflow. So, I noodled on this for a few minutes and here's where I ended up. One tricky part is that gemini is only for reading and titan is only for writing. Another tricky part is that the BBS software wants to allow editing even in clients that don't support Titan. That's cool, but I think the process with Titan could be smoother....

Editing quirk: if a post contains more than one 'line' (shift-cr is used to start a new line), it is no longer possible to edit anything but the final line using the Lagrange 'copy prev. line' prompt feature. Having posts that are not editable is a bit harsh. I realize this is more of a Lagrange issue (perhaps there should be a second option to copy anything highlighted into the prompt?), and those using standard browsers have to retype the whole post. As a possible work-around, you could...

Updated to Bubble v4.1. Trying out a new capsule title "BBS" instead of the domain name. Short and catchy? 🤔 Added a Display Settings page. The ASCII icons option was moved there. Added an option for shorter feed previews. Useful on mobile devices, for example. Added Yarn avatar. Fixed issue cross references not using issue IDs. Fixed a bug in preview text truncation.

Bubble Mobile UX/UI Personal Thoughts — Here are my thoughts about the homepage from a mobile perspective. I browse the Gemini mostly from my mobile and because of my age, I use a 140% zoom to read it. The side effect is the homepage becomes extremely long to scroll down. Personally I am not interested in reading the full preview in the homepage, whether if is desktop or mobile, I would prefer to have just a peak, something between 15/20 words. And often I am not still interested in reading...

Bubble v4.0: Muting, Tag Filters, Monthly Archive — bbs.geminispace.org has been upgraded to Bubble v4. This week's feature update adds some useful new tools and fixes several bugs. Muting You can now mute posts, subspaces, and individual users to hide them and notifications related to them. Together with follows, this allows tailoring what one sees in their Bubble feeds with quite a lot of precision. In practice, muting is a combination of silencing and blocking that is dependent on a couple...

A few more quick fixes. Now running Bubble v3.2: Division-by-zero error when viewing results of an empty poll. Reaction notifications are placed in the "@username" grouping.

Updated to Bubble v3.1. This is just a very small and quick fix for Notification Settings when one has disabled at least one of the feedback mechanisms. I slightly adjusted the email notifications by adding an extra line to separate the list of notifications from the bottom links, for extra clarity.

Bubble v3.0: Thanks and Reactions, Private Mode, Improved Issue Trackers — I have updated geminispace.org to Bubble v3.0. There has been lots of progress in many different areas. Feedback Mechanisms A key function of Bubble is to enable rich interactions that go beyond basic commenting. While feedback mechanisms such as Likes can be a nice way to show support and encouragement, they also have negative aspects: they encourage gamification and may turn posting into a popularity contest....

@skyjake How do I edit a text segment in a post which has more than one line? In my client I see a way to "paste preceding line" when I click edit. What do I do for multi-line edit? I think I'm just missing something.

Purge policy On the subspace listing page it says: Inactive and unused subspaces will be purged. What qualifies for this? I moderate one subspace that I do intend to maintain, but I want to make sure if I'm gone for a week that it doesn't get deleted.
