i am a hobby roaster, and very much just a beginner! i started around end of 2021 with an air popper and a few lbs of green coffee. around april 2022 i found a hottop 2k on craigslist and started roasting 2x 225g batches about a week which was perfect for getting a bunch of roasts in and learning.
i only roast for my own household and occasionally give away a batch when somebody asks. it very unlikely i will ever start commercial roasting, it would just kill the fun and joy for me i think. for now this is just a fun way to learn a new skill and get less expensive specialty coffee ($6-8 per lb of green coffee vs $18-25+ per 10oz bag!!), plus i get to roast it as light as i want it.
i'm roasting on an aillio bullet r1 v2. it's a 1kg roaster with an induction drum instead of gas which is really great! i usually order 1 ro 2lb bags of green coffee from sweet marias and roast half a bag which is ~450g per batch. each batch lasts about 10 days or so, meaning i only need to roast about once every 2-3 weeks. the roaster able to be controlled and log via my laptop. i was using RoasTime which is provided by aillio but i've switched to artisan instead which is open source. i will be posting jpegs of my roasts in the roast logs.
i am pretty terrible about remembering to cup my coffee, and even worse at describing it. i have to look up the SCA cupping guidelines almost every time because i forget the process. :) but it's a good habit, so i'm adding it to my roast log, we'll see how it develops.
if you ever have feedback or wanna trade a lb or so, let me know! send me an email: chris@avertentropy.wtf
