Microwave Oats

Title: Microwave Oats

Yield: 1 Servings

Cooking time: 20 minutes

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Category: Breakfast

Cuisine: Scottish

Source: James Card

Ingredients

Instructions

Measure into a 20-ounce Corelle cereal bowl:

75 grams oats

a generous sprinkling of cinnamon (no more than 1 gram)

Stir to break up any clumps of cinnamon and distribute it evenly throughout the oats.

OPTIONAL: add up to 30 grams of dried fruit, OR up to 40 grams of diced fresh fruit, and stir to break up clumps and distribute evenly.

Slowly (because the electronic kitchen scale takes a second or two to calculate) pour in 195 grams of non-fat milk. I usually stop pouring when the scale shows about 185 grams, and by the time the scale catches up it will read about 195.

Place the bowl on a microwave-safe plate to catch any (unlikely) drips or overflow.

The oats cook in a two-stage process: first to quickly bring the mixture to a boil, then to simmer at a lower setting for the remaining cooking time.

With our current microwave (Panasonic Inverter 2.2 cu. ft. 1250 watt model NN-SN968B) the keystroke sequence is "9 9 Power Power Power Power Power Power Power Power Power 1 6 6 6 Start". This gives 99 seconds at full power, then as you repeatedly press the Power button the display counts down 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2 to select 20% power, then 16 minutes and 66 seconds (yes that's really 17 minutes and 6 seconds) of simmer time.

Remove from microwave; the oats will be cooked somewhat firm or solid, rather than soft and creamy. Sprinkle on about one teaspoon full of sugar (or a little less), slowly add some more non-fat milk to just cover the surface of the oats (some of the milk will "soak in" at first).

If using fresh fruit it may be necessary to use a little less milk or add a little more cooking time. If you're cooking this for someone other than me you may want to adjust the ratios of ingredients and/or the cooking time to get a softer or creamier or sweeter result.
