The last general class I'm taking before I'm finally done with them forever is a music class. Part of our grade is 'attending' concerts (which really just means watching Youtube videos in the age of covid) and dang it's got me realizing how much I miss live music.
Most of the approved concerts that we're able to choose from are symphonies or operas. I've played cello ever since I was 10 but stopped playing with groups a few years ago because I felt like I wasn't able to dedicate enough time to it to enjoy it. Watching symphonies perform some of the pieces I used to play has me feeling pretty nostalgic for the times I was completely able to spend two hours a day playing in my school orchestra and symphony. And while I'm glad so many great concerts are out there on video for free, they really don't capture at all the feeling of sitting there in the audience or on stage -- the feeling of being immersed in the music.
I'm also missing rock concerts a lot too. I used to go to 3-4 a year and now I have to think pretty hard about what the last concert I went to was. I think it was The National? Either that or Explosions in the Sky. Both fantastic concerts by the way. Can't wait for those to really start up again. Maybe I'll have to write a little bit about some of the bands I've seen live to keep me sane in the meantime.
