Old Friends

Encrypted Comms

L. Anyone there?

J. Hello

L. Where have you been?

J. Wedding. Kyle. What's up?

L. The Keweenaw

J. Uh huh.... still there?

L. Last I checked. Girlfriend's mad.

J. Kate has a temper. What made sis mad?

L. Voice in the woods. Woman's voice. Song. Was late meeting Kate.

There was a pause. Lee stared at the Terminal window, waiting for the next response from Jimmy. His friend could be odd, insisting on communication only through encrypted methods he built himself. He was logged into a Linux computer Jimmy administered, and the encryption was controlled by something called RSA keys. Lee got the general concept - encrypt a message with the receipient's *public* key, and reiceipient would decrypt it with their *private* key.

Easy enough to understand at a high level. Jimmy had set up Lee's computer - a Windows box - with a Linux VM taht contained the necessary keys to make this all work. Lee had told Jimmy that if anything ever broke Jimmy was coming back to the Keweenaw to fix everything.

Or... Jimmy could just take a phone call.

After Lee had nearly given up on Jimmy responding, a reply showed up on the screen.

J. How long did you look for the singer?

Lee hesitated, embarrassed.

L. Two hours, I think. Felt like 15 minutes.

J. Tell Kate you're sorry. Don't go looking for the singer again. Bad news.

Lee leaned back in his office chair, the waning afternoon light coming through the windows. A shiver ran down his spine. He had been thinking about the beautiful voice, and the otherworldly song, all weekend. Had Jimmy guessed what had been running through his thoughts?

J. Trust me. Don't go looking... subject change. Speaking of girls...
