Just discovered Gemini, and I had fun implementing a simple server in Rust. The protocol can fit entirely in my head which is pretty nice, and I love the concept of going back to the "boring" web without tons of JavaScript shoved down your throat. Anyway, feels nice and refreshing, hope to discover more of it soon!

got a new 512gb sd card to double my storage on laptop. The sd card adapter has a liittle switch labled 'lock'. "Oh, this is for locking the micro sd card into place! Nice!" I thought to myself. I then tried and failed to put a file on it. Read only. Spend the next 10 minutes looking on linux mint fourms for a solution, until someone pointed out: just want to make sure nobody is overlooking the obvious: that perhaps the write protect switch on the card got flipped. I've done that a couple times when shuffling cards around too quickly... "WTF is a write protection swi-.... ohhhhhh...." As it turns out 'Lock' means 'Data Protection 'Lock'.

Most of the work to reorganize my capsule is done! I just have to fix the headers and links in my gemlog, and create some navigational links to copy to the end of every page, and then its done! Woo!!

Ugh. Finally done with all the renovations in my ”server room”. warmedal.se was down a lot longer than necessary because tilde.team was down too. ”What?” I hear you saying. Because my router restarted I got a new public IP. I have a script that updates DNS enteies when this happens, but that script calls a web page on my tilde.team user to check which IP I currently have. Today that page has only returned 502 Bad Gateway 🤷 Anywho. Back up and I have no more renovations that should affect it (famous last words…)

Every time one of my windows machines has a problem, I just open up task manager and end every process with the word "microsoft" in it. This works a surprising amount of the time. For reference, I know even less about windows than I do about Linux. Just thought this was funny

Hot sauce is an interesting product market. The brands are highly differentiated and I've never heard of a "generic" store-brand hot sauce. I mostly use Frank's Red Hot or Cholula, depending on the food. Frank's is better on grease & fried food, and Cholula is better on carbs & protein. I went through a Sriracha phase in college, but I rarely use it anymore except to salvage stale pizza. My dad always had Tobasco growing up. I never buy Tobasco, but when I use it at a restaurant, say on some greasy eggs at a diner, it tastes like a fancy delicacy. And that's not even getting into all of the Mexican hot sauces..

@martin What piece(s) of information from the client cert do you use to uniquely identify a user? Fingerprint? Entire file contents? Something else? I'm new to this method of authentication and am curious how to implement it for my own apps.

A few of my favourite protocol jokes, part 2. --- If you want to hear my ICMP joke, ping me. Knock knock. Who's there? Ethernet LAN with CSMA/CD. Ethernet LAN with CSMA/CD who? I'll tell you at a random point in the future. I had a bunch of HTTP 301 jokes but I've not been able to find them for a long time. There's a funny story about RFC1918, but it's a bit of an insider joke. The hardest kind of joke to tell is an NTP joke – it's all about timing. Want to hear a SYN flood joke? Want to hear a SYN flood joke? Want to hear a SYN flood joke? Okay, FIN. I couldn't come up with a good DNS joke though, so whois going to give us one?

The Fediverse grew so much in the past year. It is so exciting, yet bad for me as a late-diagnosed ADHD guy. I plan to use Station and Bubble BBS more freely and time my minutes per day on the various Fediverse platforms from now on
