I am beginning to understand what FOSS Burnout is, in a very small way. I maintained a thing mostly for myself. I spent nontrivial time, effort, and money making it available for the public, because that was just as easy as keeping it private. People started using it. I am no longer interested in the thing for ideological reasons. But I feel obligated to not let down users.
Now that it is stable and new updates take minimal effort to publish, I am ok maintaining it for a long time like this. But I dislike the project for ideological reasons and would prefer stopping. Users have asked me to keep going or upstream my work to the completely uninterested corporate upstream project. "They" already decided that adopting this work is not a priority. So here I am, stuck with maintenance forever.
