Solar alert

Issued on 2023 Apr 18 1515 UTC

A fast forward shock was registered in the solar wind parameters around 13:20 UTC on April 18th. The shock is a precursor of an ICME arrival, possibly related to the partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME), which lifted off the solar surface following a filament eruption around 11 UTC on April 15th. The CME was not detected by the automated detection tools, but the current solar wind speed suggest a velocity close to 500 km/s. Following the shock arrival an ICME with a magnetic cloud is visible in the in situ data. The interplanetary magnetic field has reached a maximum of 18.7 nT with a minimum Bz component of - 7.5 nT. The solar wind speed has reached 538km/s and the solar density increased to 20 ppcc. Active geomagnetic conditions have been observed locally over Belgium and further periods of active geomagnetic conditions and minor storms can be expected with possible isolated moderate storms depending on the evolution of the ICME arrival.
