Back to school, really?

Posted on 2023-07-07

One of the great thing about moving places is that now I leave in the same city again as one of my best friends :). This is great as we can see each other more often when life allows. Today, we had lunch together at my place which is something we try to do once a week. He surprised me today by saying we should take remote courses at the university "just for fun".

He suggested to go for a "licence degree" (the first level after high school, takes 3 years to complete) in philosophy. I was not surprise by the topic as this is a subject we like to discuss and discover together. We try to sometime read the same books or at least learn about a common philosophical concepts so we can share and discuss about it later. We often chat about how we both didn't read much when younger and that it may be a reason why we are so eager now.

I enjoy learning and I've been thinking for a while to deep dive more into philosophy and/or psychology (in another post one day, I may talk about how much linked I think both these 2 subjects are). But going back to school, really? Even remotely and at a different pace, that sounded crazy… And for at least 3 years to get the degree!

On one hand, I find the idea appealing. It would definitely help my learning curve and knowledge. It might as well give me better advice on what to read and study with more structure. The difficulty when discovering on your own is that sometime it is hard to focus and I tend to go in many directions. So a more structure approach might be helpful. I might also help being more rigid with objectives and timeline instead of procrastinating too much (my strongest ability).

On the other hand, there are clearly some drawbacks… I already spend a lot of time working at my day job and usually the days are long enough… I also don't know the level of effort needed and I don't want to spend all my non working time studying, the purpose being mostly for the pleasure of learning. If that becomes a chore, it looses the main objective. I'm a bit torn about the exam aspect of it too. I don't really like the idea of going back to work for a grade (which, whatever you may think, is very different than for money in a "regular" job, at least for me)… It is not something I would look forward to. Even less the exam period.

This might end up like an already dead idea because it seems it might be too late to register to the program (TBC) but at least it is fun to think about. I'm feeling at the same time intrigued, motivated, scared and crazy at the same time :D. I don't know if we're going to do it or not yet, but I thought I would use my "writing laptop time" reflecting about it, so I thought why note write it at the same time, so here we are some time and a gemlog later… And no decision yet.

PS: It was interesting writing such a post, different than my usual ones. I like the idea of more gemini specific articles like this not available on my web blog, so maybe we'll see more of them soon.
