Rallying With Jonn

Jonn guided me through some Richard Burns Rally stuff today. Custom field of view, custom pace notes, and exercising some of the pacenotes he spent time working on. Such a nice guy!

It's been a long time since we did any sim racing stuff together because I've just been in and out of weird moods and generally a mess. It's funny for me to think about it, but I am really embarassed - I got quite upset last time we were lapping in Assetto Corsa together around Goodwood and he just kept beating my track times. It seems ridiculous to me that it would bother me, but there you go. It apparently did bother me, and I've been hesitant to do much live multiplayer as a result. I'm really hopeful that some recovery time will alleviate these kinds of ridiculous responses to benign stimuli.

Sim Racing Hobby

Boy oh boy am I into sim racing. I am consistently doing it for multiple hours every day. I play a bunch of different sims (in no particular order):

- Richard Burns Rally (RallySimFans distribution aka RBR or RSF)

- Dirt Rally 2.0 (DR2)

- Assetto Corsa (AC)

- Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC)

- Automobilista (AMS)

- Automobilista 2 (AMS2)

- RaceRoom Racing Experience (R3E)

- rFactor 2 (RF2)

- Race 07

I also dabble sometimes in Power and Glory 3 - a total conversion mod for GTR2, and I have the "UltraMod" for Race07 which adds a ton of content.

1 Million-foot Summary of the Sims

Richard Burns Rally and Dirt Rally 2.0 are obviously rally games, so I think of them discretely from the rest. Richard Burns Rally is practically ancient, from around 2002; while DR2 is only a couple years old. DR2 is much fancier graphically and much easier to pick up and play, but it is somewhat more arcadey than modern RBR. RBR sometimes looks almost photorealistic despite its aging graphics, thanks to the techniques employed at the time. It runs on a potato and thanks to community support as employed in the RSF distribution, it has modern force feedback and physics that outpace DR2. I play both of them frequently, so they each have their place.

Race 07 and GTR2 are quite old SimBin games that are still great, but somewhat outclassed by the other more modern ones. I still have fun in them, but don't go to them for the best graphics, best AI or most realistic physics or force feedback.

R3E is from Sector3 - the spiritual successor to SimBin who made GTR2 and Race07, and the lineage seems clear when you play it. It feels like a game that has evolved over many years, not unlike RF2. RF2 is also an older game of the same era that is still widely played today and has seen a ton of improvement.

Assetto Corsa is a little newer than R3E and RF2, but it officially hit end of life with no more support from its developer - Kunos Simulazioni. That said, the community has provided so much support for this game that it is still going strong today. The physics and force feedback are not the best, but it is an overall solid package that, with modding, is very compelling today.

ACC and AMS2 are the newest games of the bunch. ACC is incredibly demanding graphically, so I tend not to play it for that reason. It feels great and I enjoy it, but it has another "flaw": It only focuses on GT3 (and GT4 with one of the DLC packs). The scope is smaller, but the simulation is fantastic. AMS2 is undergoing heavy development and has a lot of support from the community. It is a good looking game that plays well. It's a solid all-around package that is easy to like, but maybe a little difficult to completely love.
