Itâs so cruel how a good dream can seem 100% real with no hint that itâs a dream (beside the fact that Iâm in absolute paradise) until I suddenly wake up and like âoh, no, that didnât happen?!â And then âwait, that didnât happen either? None of it did?! And these people donât even exist?â
I need to get better news sources since I had heard zilch about this until checking in on breadtube for the first time in a while and they were all ablaze about it.
The crackdown on climate activism is beyond the pale. The problem doesnât go away no matter how illegal it becomes talk about it.
âThere is one security/police officer for every forty-eight Palestinians, whereas there is one officer for every 384 Americans,â El Kurd writes. âAs another shocking point of comparison, East Germany, considered the quintessential police state, had only one officer or employed informant per sixty-six Germans.â

Acolyte comes before novice. D&D gets this right but Magic confusingly got it wrong with Chandra.
Yeah, yeah, a novice is a well-known word for âa beginnerâ but at least itâs a beginner whoâs starting to head down that road. An acolyte is just participating without anticipating đđ»ââïž

I kinda wanna rewatch season one of Rings of Power. But mostly the Galadriel and Halbrand stories. Halbrandâs story is what I felt worked the best for me đ€·đ»ââïž
The harfoot arc got repetitive. Good but couldâve been a third of the length. All the other arcs were good. Bronwyn, Celebrimbor, Durin etc.
âThe biggest deviation made from Tolkienâs works, which was approved by the estate and lore experts, was to condense the Second Age from thousands of years to a short period of time. This avoided human characters frequently dying due to their relatively short lifespans and allowed major characters from later in the timeline to be introduced earlier in the series. The showrunners considered using non-linear storytelling instead, but felt this would prevent the audience from emotionally investing in the series.â
I wish they had. Maybe we wouldâve been even more invested? đ€
âThey said many real-life historical dramas also condense events like this, and felt they were still respecting the âspirit and feelingâ of Tolkienâs writings.â
But real-life historical dramas arenât a good genre. I like a good documentary and I like fiction set in past eras but condensed and faked history shows are usually not the best.

Weird how my hardest matchup (Calix) and my easiest matchup (rotpriest) are both W/G aggro decks. Only that the Calix deck can sometimes win the value town race where with rotpriest itâs the other time around, I can outvalue them with Simic beats.

There are three kinds of mistakes:
1. I acknowledge the mistake and we backtrack / retcon
2. I acknowledge the mistake but we let it stand
3. I donât even say that something is went wrong and just try to poker face it.
(Those are, just like my âââââ, sorted from major to minorâpeople who are more liable to hide major mistakes than minor ones are messed up.)
I make so many mistakes that there are a more than a few of categories 1 and 3, but when in doubt we go with category 2.
80% of mistakes fall in that category, Iâd say.

Photographs in the mid 19th century were often printed in true continuous tone through the woodburytype process.
Much gorgeouser than the cheaper halftone process that replaced it. Itâs kind of meaningless to attempt to look at a video or stills through a digital screen to see how it looked. I wanna see it IRL with a loupe.
Itâs not sustainable in a resource-strained world. Thatâs why halftone rightly replaced it. But it was beautiful while it lasted.

E-wing ships first showed up in the wonderful Dark Empire comic book series in legends and will be brought into canon again with the Ahsoka show later this summer. Iâm not sure if Iâll see that show but Iâm glad this ship will live on in canon đ

Crowdfunding ultimately did more harm than good, and streaming services like Netflix are pretty much only doing harm, but both are examples of how what we consider to be âmarketsâ and âeconomicsâ and âcapitalismâ can radically and fundamentally and rapidly change, all the while people are eagerly signing up for it!
If some of yâall clever game designers or network protocol designers (and crowdfunding was invented by protocol designers Schear, Kelsey, and Schneier) could get into economics, we could see some great innovations to start addressing exploitation & externalities. Fun fun fun â„

Itâs not easy when a lot of the resources we think we have are completely illusory since they were built on the fossil economy, probably better known as a broken and tattered lie. So we have a big challenge ahead of us. Letâs keep working together on this đ«

Eugen made a FAQ on Threads. Still no answer on whether they will federate with small servers or if theyâll have a limited allowlist.
I feel like all yay-sayers and the nay-sayers and the fence-sitters (that should cover just about everybody) are all looking pretty over-eager since the federation part is still completely vaporware.
And some weaker arguments like âWell, even if Threads abandoned ActivityPub down the line, where we would end up is exactly where we are now. XMPP did not exist on its own outside of nerd circles, while ActivityPub enjoys the support and brand recognition of Mastodon.â
Getting suddenly cut off from friends and fam is a disaster.
The pro-block side doesnât want the federation to begin and the anti-block side doesnât want it to end. Thatâs why the âthey might pull the plug at any timeâ is unsettling to both sides and an argument to seriously consider for everyone.
âWeâll end up exactly where we are nowâ.
Those that think that now is good donât wanna change it in the first place so thatâs a weird thing to say to try to placate them.
Those that think that now is a living nightmare are legitimately worried about the consequences of a sudden defederation.
And that includes me. Our greatest enemy, probably better known as the most evil corporation in the world, has suddenly laid down their arms and joined us in our federated ways. And I would want to be stoked about that. Itâs something Iâve longed for for close to twenty years. And to me, âbut the last time this happened, with XMPP, they were concealed carrying the whole time and when they have enough of a critical mass they betrayed usâ is a legit fear and âwe will be exactly where we are nowâ is the opposite of comfort.
The brand recognition of Jabber didnât help XMPPâit ultimately hindered it. đ€·đ»ââïž
Just like email had issues with sendmail as a âbrandâ (to the extent that an MTA can have name recognition) but email could eventually overcome those issues through peopleâs love of the protocol itself.
My plan is to try to federate if theyâll let me (and thatâs a big if. And Iâll block if it becomes impossible to moderate) so Iâm not part of the blocking pact, but Iâve been so disappointed in the arguments and conduct coming from the anti-block side.
And some from the pro-block side, too.
The vitriol is heartbreaking.

Looking for a writing app for iOS that supports plaintext, works offline, and has Emacs-like auto-fill and swedish-postfix input method, and autocapitalization.
I donât need syntax highlighting and stuff, Iâm just gonna write prose đ€·đ»ââïž
I donât need a minimal UI or outlining or anything like that either. I do that kinda structuring work on my desktop. None of the âI donât needâ stuff hurt, either, but Iâm just specifically looking for the swedish-postfix input method, I guess. Iâve never seen anything like that for iOS. Itâs the killer feature of Emacs.
On iOS, I can get Ă„ by alt-a, and dead umlaut dots with alt-u that can compose into Ă€ and ö with a and o respectively. Thatâs nice for shorter texts but for longer stuff I really miss Emacsâ automatic recognition of strings like aa for Ă„, ae for Ă€ and oe for ö.
I got Emacs itselfâand swedish-postfixâworking on iSH (a i686 emulator) but for some reason my autocapitalization elisp doesnât work. I need to debug it I guess đ€·đ»ââïž

The problem with Biden is that heâs too moderate already, and that his administration is drill crazy, handing out fracking permits like they were disco flyers in Berlin. Creating a âmoderateâ alternative to Biden and Trump is like proposing a compromise between getting both of our legs broken and getting killed. âHow about we break both of your arms, too, howâs that? Wouldnât that feel a lot nicer?â
We need climate action now. Leave it in the ground.

Maintainer of straight.el is working on a replacement called âelpacaâ; Iâm not an early adopter so Iâm sticking with straight for the forseeable but this is a note to self because once elpaca is all done & sorted, itâs gonna be time to move over.
Moget.
