Oops, My Query Breaks DuckDuckGo Lite

2023-06-26T20:17:49Z

So I was casually doing my thing when I stumble upon an error in DuckDuckGo Lite. The page is absolutely bare bones (literally plain text as HTML) and writes the following:

If this error persists, please let us know: example-email@domain.example

(Email redacted because you don't need it if you're reading this blog post instead of that page)

After sending the email about the breaking query, I checked by doing some variations on it. Nope, didn't seem to break.

Kinda odd. What's more odd is that it seems to only affect the lite version of DuckDuckGo, not the normal DuckDuckGo.

Normal DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo Lite

I'm not going to disclose the full query (because that would get you the email and a bit of my browsing), but here's an example query that doesn't seem to break for some reason:

site:example.com example.org

Replace example.com with the right domain, replace example.org with the right domain and I got the error. Except for that example. It seems quite specific to my query.

That's about it. There's not much else.
