23615 2-JUN 22:00 General Information TRS-80 help needed From: PROGREENS To: ALL Greetings, One of hte wife's friends came over today and dropped off a TRS-80 model 4 computer, and asked us (meaning me :/) to see if it worked. Near as I can figure it does. but I need a copy of the latest DOS (version 6.x??) and a terminal program + archival utilities. The only DOS I've got is 1.3, which I think is just for Model 3's. Thank you for your time, and please don't mind the silly questions. I run another obselete, abandoned computer system (Apple II's) <g>. Chuck -*- 23616 2-JUN 22:37 T1000/1200/3000 RE: Xenix (Re: Msg 23612) From: WESF To: TVDOG Well, thanks for butting in!! Anyhow, is this grounding strap thing, a thing on the bottom of the drive about center that is sorta circular and touches the underside of the drive, but isn't firmly attached? If this is a simple problem to fix, I would like to do so...this thing is getting bad enough that it's about to give me a headache at times!!! Wesley -*- 23618 2-JUN 23:57 T1000/1200/3000 RE: Xenix (Re: Msg 23616) From: TVDOG To: WESF Sounds like it. Take a small piece of self-stick foam (like weather- stripping) and stick it to the back of the strap away from the center of the drive. That will usually dampen the vibration. Jeff (tvdog) -*- 23619 3-JUN 17:06 General Information Tandy Access From: RCPOLK To: ALL HI, I was hoping that someone here in the TANDY SIG could tell me, if it is possible via computer, to find out what 'obsolete' items that TANDY may still have on their shelves in TEXAS or am I still stuck going to Radio Shack personel and have them do the search? Wouldn't be great to be able to go thru their inventory, find what you want and order it from home. I was even surprised that TANDY did not appear on the WEB. Anyways if you can help, send me mail rcpolk@delphi.com as I am not a regular visitor here. Thanks...Rich -*- 23620 3-JUN 20:00 T1000/1200/3000 RE: Xenix (Re: Msg 23609) From: STEVE152 To: WESF Sounds fair enough. E-mail me your snail-mail address & I'll send a check. About the hard drive...I wouldn't want to spend much considering it's age and the problems you're having with it. What do you want for it? Steve -*- 23621 4-JUN 17:09 T1000/1200/3000 RE: Xenix (Re: Msg 23618) From: WESF To: TVDOG so it is that little round metal piece sitting at the center of the drive that is probably making all the noise? So if I stick a piece of that foam stuff to the underside of it (do I stick it down agains the drive or just to it), That should stop the vibration tha -*- 23623 5-JUN 20:48 T1000/1200/3000 RE: Xenix (Re: Msg 23622) From: WESF To: TVDOG Alright....I'll give it a try! Thanks for the info, and hopefully this will work! I hope so, my ears will thank you! Wesley -*- 23624 5-JUN 20:50 T1000/1200/3000 RE: Xenix (Re: Msg 23620) From: WESF To: STEVE152 Ok, I'll send you my address, etc via email... As for the hard drive, I don't know if you've been following the conversation here or not, but it sounds like it is a part of the drive making the noise, and it sounds correctable...let's hope so. Anyway, I may want to keep the drive once I get another to replace it...especially maybe if it is still ok...but if you do want it, I may consider letting it go then. Anyways, I'll let you go and get some email written to ya! Wesley -*- 23625 7-JUN 05:41 T1000/1200/3000 RE: Xenix (Re: Msg 23624) From: STEVE152 To: WESF Wesley I hope you can get the noise fixed okay. I understand you wanting to keep it if it can be fixed. I need a HD for a model 12, the one I have spins up but then acts as if the power was turned off...slows and stops. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve. -*- 23626 7-JUN 22:22 T1000/1200/3000 RE: Xenix (Re: Msg 23625) From: WESF To: STEVE152 I'm not totally sure if I'm even going to keep this one...it's small...and I want to get rid of it so I can save another slot on my already full motherboard. I helped a teacher at my school set up a 20 meg SCSI in her old XT, and it now supposedly does the same thing. I need to get it from her and check it out a bit...don't know what can be done for it. Maybe someone else here can help you out. You say it's an MFM drive? Wesley ps-did you get my address that I sent you via e-mail? -*- 23628 8-JUN 22:06 T1000/1200/3000 RE: Xenix (Re: Msg 23626) From: STEVE152 To: WESF yeah, 40 meg is small by today's standards, but it's midsize for these machines (12, 16, 6000). Yes it's a MFM drive, but not the original one, a previous owner had a 44 meg installed in place of a 5 meg! It's a Micropolis 1302, or 1202 I think. I got your address, you should have it next week. I'll be looking for that check and get it out to you asap... Walt All mathochists suffer from calculust... -*- 23632 14-JUN 21:11 General Information RE: Grammar Checker (Re: Msg 23631) From: TVDOG To: WALTBOYD Yes, there was a DeskMate grammar checker. RightWriter for DeskMate, from RightSoft, Inc., was featured in a Tandy brochure I have: Using artificial intelligence, the program can critique your documents for correct grammar, style, punctuation and usage. Jeff (tvdog) -*- 23633 14-JUN 23:04 General Information RE: Grammar Checker (Re: Msg 23632) From: WALTBOYD To: TVDOG Jeff, thanks... I had forgotten that... As of 1992, they could be reached at: (phone) 813-923-0233, (800#) 800-999-0244, (fax) 813-921-7849. Tandy Software Replacement might also know something: (phone) 800-451-9409. If all else fails, you might ask in comp.sys.tandy to see if someone would sell you a used copy. Good luck. Jeff (tvdog) -*- 23635 15-JUN 02:58 T1000/1200/3000 Dmgif 1.1 for DOS or DeskMate From: TVDOG To: ALL A new version of Dmgif is available by ftp from: musie.phlab.missouri.edu:/pub/trs/tandy1000/graphics/dmgif11* The new version is basically identical to the old one. It fixes some minor bugs (thanks to those who reported them), adds online help, and, most significantly, includes a runtime version to run under DOS as well as DeskMate. Dmgif 1.1 is installed from diskettes and runs from the same diskettes, under DOS or DeskMate, and is thus more compatible with the DeskMate standard. dmgif11.doc explains how to make the diskettes and install on your hard drive or run the program from diskettes. The new version is a *lot* bigger than the old one (0.9); this is mainly due to the fact that it now can run directly under DOS. The size difference is caused by the fact that the DeskMate kernel and all device drivers must be included, along with an install program. If you have DeskMate, Dmgif 1.1 will not take a whole lot more space on your hard drive than Dmgif 0.9, since most of the files on the install disks won't be needed. The DOS version should not be run on a system with DeskMate installed. Under certain circumstances, the DeskMate 3.03 runtime used by DMGIF.EXE will conflict with versions of DeskMate earlier than 3.03, causing lockups. Followers of this forum may recall a discussion of whether the DeskMate 3.03 runtime will work with disk partitions larger than 32 meg. DMGIF.EXE has been tested and runs fine on an IBM PS/2 with disk partitions larger than 512 meg. Dmgif is a GIF/JPEG viewer using the DeskMate 3 interface. It is menu- driven, uses intuitive dialog boxes for user input, supports (but does not require) a mouse, and provides online help (context-sensitive under DOS, or under DeskMate 3.03 or later). It supports CGA, EGA, VGA, Hercules, Tandy 1000/PC-Jr, or Tandy 1000 SL/TL/RL video modes. Supported printers include the IBM Graphics printer (Epson FX-series compatible), HP Laserjciate the help. I am enquiring for a friend and will pass all this along to her... If it comes down to it, I cannot think of any reason why a file cannot be saved in ASCII and checked with a conventional grammar checker... Walt Memory is the second thing to go. First is the hard drive... -*- 23637 18-JUN 10:13 General Information RE: Radio Shack - JUNK (Re: Msg 23590) From: GLENTZ To: TVDOG Last I heard in early May they had an issue at the printers but they couldn't tell me a mail date other than soon. i you want your money back give them a call. The phone #'s in the magazine are valid. The leading publication for Tandy (PC-compatible) computer users is now: Computer News PC P.O. Box 680 Casper, Wyoming 82602 Subscriptions are $24/year for 6 bimonthly issues. They have a large shareware library available on diskettes. They also sell replacement and upgrade parts, including ribbons for all Tandy printers, and carry some hard-to-find commercial software, including DeskMate 3.05. I'm not associated with CNPC (in fact, I just subscribed), but the publica- tion is receiving good reviews and is being aggressively promoted by its publisher. It is a newsletter, though, not a slick magazine like _PCM_ was.
