2022/0524/1330 — waterbirds

The past few days have started out cold and overcast, then cleared to be very still wintery days. Today it was almost warm enough to be in shirt sleeves on my lunch walk. Almost…

Around the campus to the Jock Marshall reserve then stood there gazing out looking for birds, the water was dead still, a rich coffee colour. Three individual birds, three sizes, three different behaviours. Out on a dead tree a single White-faced heron[1] stood immobile, I only noticed that it was there when it moved to preen the back of its wings. Nearby a Black duck[2] was paddling slowly, dabbling around at the base of the reeds and looking for food. Further away a tiny Australasian grebe was powering along with a little speedboat wake behind, never still, it covered half the pond while I stood there watching. Size and speed in inverse proportions
