In our house, laundry is my duty, but in the last several weeks I fell behind on sorting it. I would wash our clothes as usual, but after they dried, I would leave them in baskets and neglect to put them away.
Today I took the half-dozen baskets strewn around and dumped them all into one pile in the living room. The stack of clothes was huge, and I was a little disheartened when I saw how far I'd let it go. Fortunately, while it took me a while to get through it, the task was less demanding than I thought it would be. And when I saw that enormous pile disappear, I felt extremely good.
Sometimes I get discouraged when a project requires a lot of work, especially when it involves house chores or other menial tasks. I'm tempted not to bother and simply do something else. But when I muster up the discipline to get the job done, not only do I feel relief to be able to cross it off my to-do list, but I feel satisfied with having worked hard, and I often feel motivated to do even more.
It's a good thing I have that motivation now, too. That stack of dishes in the sink is getting a little tall.
