Pseudo Federation Idea — An idea popped into my head regarding Bubble and "federation". I think it was discussed previously that making the Bubble software federate with other instances would add too much code and complexity. My idea is a kind of pseudo federation. I'm thinking on a user level you could combine posts from multiple subspaces into one feed. But instead of just multiple subspaces from the same instance, it could be posts from a different instance's subspace. More specifically,...
Apologies if this was discussed elsewhere, but is there a good description on how to set up a tinylog? Did a bit of digging and didn't find a 101-level description.

FWIW, since adding better indexing of plain text documents, all those adult text files @Ruby_Witch mentioned now appear in Kennedy searches

A random Bubble tip I've been intending to mention: user and subspace names are case-insensitive but case-preserving. This means you can change the capitalization of your names without breaking any links. For example: /u/SKYJAKE User accounts can be renamed in Settings and subspaces can be renamed on the subspace admin page.

Handling of whitespace indentation — I am currently playing a bit with a protocol called Nex which is kind of like gemini but with less features created by the owner of midnight.pub. This is similar to gemini in the sense that it uses a text format with links as =>. I wrote a nex2gemini gateway as CGI script and have used Lagrange to view that (along with Amfora) and I noticed that Lagrange does not handle whitespace indent...

Thoughts on my latest post? It touches on language learning, but also the pain of failure. Content Warning: self-harm — Thoughts on my latest post? [gemini link]

Anyone here participating in the old computer challenge? — Either on old hardware, or by slowing down your modern PC. It starts on Monday, and seems like the kind of thing folks here would be into. :)

Transitioning on the job — I've been sitting on a blog post for a few years now about my experience with transitioning at my old job. A core point of it is how once they finally saw me as "not man" (though obviously not "lady") they started treating me like shit, pushing me out, and straight up lying to get rid of me. I've just got two problems with it: it's incredibly lengthy and I don't have the energy to edit it. People will get upset and I don't want to start another round of cis folk...

NSFW Text Games — Hi, everyone! Following the survey that I posted here previously, I'm adding a little bit of NSFW flavor to the smolweb! I'm starting a series of writeups about NSFW text-based games, as I feel like the genre is a good fit for the mostly text-centric interface that we find ourselves looking at on here. Please go ahead and check it out and let me know what you think! Is it too short? Too long? Did I forget to cover...

A long time ago I had the idea of changing vim keybinds such that each operation would have its dual as capital. most operations such as fF do this already. I wanted to do it for everything including movement. In the end it was too non standard given any reduction in complexity, didn't work for special characters, and it was unclear what dual meant (e.g. iI vs oO vs aA).

Bit of a long shot, but does anyone know of any retro computing meetups or groups in Ohio (especially Columbus)? Would love to meet others & get the chance to check out some old computers in person!

The current resolution is a great start, but it really needs to be improved. How are we supposed to do proper quantum physics when we're limited to the planck length and above? I feel like adding a few more orders of magnitude is probably doable.

I wrote a plugin to use vim as a smallnet client frontend. You need a backend that formats things ok for it. Lynx works if you want web/gopher. I wrote a backend that supports gemini as well (and supports 10 gemini and 7 gopher types for input). It works pretty well so far. [https link] Plugin [https link] Custom Backend From the plugin folder run `make` and you are all set. The backend requires a go compiler (the plugin defaults to using lynx). For info on customization, get help in vim: [...

Snapping Turtle — I've been getting into photography recently. I recently got a DSLM camera - my first digital camera that isn't part of a phone. It's been pretty fun so far. I did some 35mm film photograpy years ago, and this is much faster and easier. Here's one of the first photos I took with this camera. It's a bit challenging to fit these files into the size requirement, but I'll do my best without messing up the quality too much. Something that this photo taught me is that perspective...

Editing Near-ASCII Binary Files — I am experimenting with a near-ASCII file format containing text messages and binary markers (high bit set). Vim is surprisingly useful: it will display files in a reasonable-for-debugging way by displaying hex values for high characters. It preserves these during editing, and will even allow you to enter non-ascii characters: In Insert mode, [preformatted] will insert 0xAB. o will similarly take 3 octal digits. Just numbers for decimal digits.

The Nightfall Express (nex://) — New solnet protocol with a very neat and minimal design. I like the approach of just inferring the response type from the filename extension or trailing slash. Keeps it simple. nex uses hard-wrapped lines for directories (like gopher) which gives more opportunity for creative page styling using ascii art and center text alignment and such. The recommended line width is 60-characters, which is too large for...

I've been making a lot of updates to Kennedy, my Gemini search engine recently: Improvements to Image search index Now indexing contents of plain text files Adding a Capsule Health checking tool Indexing the link text of files so you can find MP3s, PDFs, etc. Adding a "filetype:" operator to filter Please give it a try and tell me what you think. Feedback is always welcome!
