I have noticed a strange thing about the Japanese corner of the Internet: the number of pages presenting themselves as dialogues.
Often times when I look up something in Japanese and click a result, I see some character asking another character how something works and the page continues in a dialog format. Alternatively, the explaining character may start with "today I will explain XYZ" to the second character who asks questions.
Have an example. As I listened to a podcast episode on the Japanese phrase させていただく (a controversial phrase that makes the sentence politer), I came across the phrase 絶対敬語. I could tell it literally translated to "absolute honorifics" and had a vague idea of what it meant from context (language used only when talking to the emperor), but wanted to know more. I looked it up and found this page explaining it alongside 二重尊敬 (double honorifics):
I realized I had seen this sort of thing several times before, but this time made a connection with Socratic dialogues. I thought about it some more, and realized that they deviate from a true Socratic dialogue in the lack of an argument, but still I find the frequency of these pages pretty strange.
I suppose this post lacks a point, I just wanted to point this anomaly out. I have not come across this type of page on the English web, at least as far as I can remember.
Have a link to the podcast episode I mentioned in case someone cares:
