A long ride today, starting straight after breakfast and heading south along the Great Ocean Road down to Apollo Bay where I had a coffee & a muffin, then rode back to Lorne. Didn't call in at Kennett River so I didn't get to check up on the very tame parrots, but along the way there were a few birds to be seen, and sadly, a few roadkill wallabies.
On the way in to Apollo bay, off in the distance over the water a gannet[1] was wheeling around, almost indistinguishable from other seabirds, but larger, and so brightly white that they're unmistakable
Leaving Apollo Bay a Buff-banded rail[2] went streaking across the grass beside the road, head down and looking like roadrunner(tm) from the cartoon. They're very attractive, and differ widely in behaviour, some places they're fearless and stalk around picnic grounds stealing snacks from under tables, other places like here they're very wary and shoot off at the first sight of a person.
The surprise sight for me was while passing through some trees at Scenes Creek, three or four female Satin bowerbirds[3] flew across the road, a flash of speckled green and red eyes, then briefly perched on a branch alongside the road watching me before flying off further into the bush
