Fifteen minutes into my ride today and there was a loud WHOOSH... CLACK! as a magpie[1] shot down from the trees on the Gardiners creek path. No contact, just adrenalin. Of course I then spent the entire time of the next couple of hours looking every which way as I rode, discovered that the "clack-clack" sound of a car pulling out to pass but driving over the cat-eyes in the road sounds remarkably similar. Even replanned my route on the way home to avoid the Huntingdale wetlands and the obstreporous butcherbirds[2]
