Synology DS920+ & DX517 Expansion Unit
I recently purchased a DX517 to add an additional 5 bays of storage to my already substantial 4x20TB 920+. While the actual physical setup was fine, the newer versions of DSM contain a bug and the UX leaves a little to be desired.
Learnings
- The instructions indicate that you should look at Hardware/External Devices and see the DX517. However, it won't appear. However, checking Control Panel / Info Center /Hardware.Expansion Unit 1 will show the DX517.
- Once you put a drive (or more!) in the DX517, the unit & drives will show up in Storage Manager / Overview.
- Drives in the DX517 cannot be added to an existing SHR pool on the 920+ or at least it wouldn't let me. This might be due to my expansion drives being smaller or it might be intentional due to the fact it would all be running over a single cable in the back.
- Drives in the DX517 are in their own pool(s).
Answers to Questions I've Seen Elsewhere
- HDDs not on the official approved list will still work in the drive. That said, this is a NAS and you should prioritize durability.
- The 920+ contains a memory expansion slot to upgrade it's existing 4GB. The specs say that you can add another 4GB when in-fact, you can add a 16GB chip. Control Panel / Info Center / Hardware.Total Physical Memory for details.
