Help reading this language

welcome

This is an english page inside the toki pona portion of muir capsule to help others learn how to use toki pona!

What

toki pona is an artistic philosophical conlang created in 2001 by Sonja Lang! It was an attempt to understand life in 120 words, now there are about 137 essential words.

Why

idk! wei've always been interested in langauges and how people communicate, and this one seemed very interesting and fun to learn. the community seemed inviting as well, being open to the queer community.

a goal of toki pona, too, is to poke at the sapir-whorf hypothesis that sort of says that langauge affects how we perceive reality. toki pona is inherently implied good meaning and so it's been interesting to notice how it helps reframe things into a positive and concrete outlook on things for muis.

How

Basically just cram the words into the brain however works. theres only like 120ish, so thats typically 12 days of 10 worsd. wei did 24 days of 5 words but also did the sitelen cards, which was 15 cards a day 5(en->tok, tok->en, sitelen->en).

Flash Cards

Sitelen

ok ok what's all this fuss about sitelen. sitelen is the hieroglyphs that jan sonja made for each toki pona word. so basically, each toki pona word can be written in latin characters like `toki pona` or it can be written in sitelen. heres an example of the word toki pona in sitelen

toki-pona

wei found it very useful to learn the sitelen, as it really helped unlock the meaning behind the words and somewhat how to use them (especially obvious is how it helps intuitively understand `li` `e` and some other helper words)
