Crawling Sumac

2023-05-15

Cranked up 'ol Bessie Saturday morning to meet a friend for breakfast. No problems with Bessie and I had a great time with my bud. Afterwards I headed to the bank and took care of some business. Bess cranked just fine and ran fine. Headed to the grocery store to pick up some vittles for that evening and with the exception of doing all the shopping only to find out I left my wallet in Bessie, I didn't have any issues.

Unfortunately, Bess must have gotten her feelings hurt. I loaded up the groceries and turned the key only to hear... nothing. No clicking. Light didn't come on. Nothing. There wasn't even enough go-juice to lock/unlock the door.

Fortunately the Mrs. was working in the same shopping center so I got her car and tried to jump it. That didn't work so I grabbed her Yota, took the groceries home, got some tools and came back and did a battery swap. After the battery swap it started right up with no problem and hasn't had any issues.

While this seems like an unfortunate series of events at first glance, it was actually quite the blessing:

1) I checked my vehicle purchase and maintenance log that I keep and the last time I replaced the battery was 4-1/2 years ago, so it was just a matter of time.

2) Bessie didn't die in some far off place, on the interstate or anything similar. It was in the parking lot of a local shopping center near my house.

3) Bessie died in the same shopping center the Mrs. works and her car was there for me to be able to borrow.

4) It happened on a Saturday when I had no appointments/schedule to keep.

5) I was able to swap out the batteries and get going again approximately 30 minutes before it started raining - and it rained off and on all afternoon.

6) I finished using the Mrs. car and got 'ol Bessie started at the exact time she takes her lunch break so she was able to go home for her lunch without delay.

The above is not just me being overly optimistic or being an easy-going guy. Those are real and specific blessings!
