hey hey hey, fellas! it's me, fryster! i've been playing veloren for like two years on my crappy little laptop, when the game used to use opengl to display graphics. now it only uses vulkan. if you're wondering "what's a veloren?", then i can just sum it up as "free and open source open world voxel-style mmorpg". basically community made cube world, if you know that game. i will assume that you use linux in this situation cause my laptop runs on penguin computer machine system. windows users can still use this fix, i don't judge. (linux is obviously the best for this game tho) and i will also assume you fiddled around with the in-game settings already like how anyone would when they have a low performing game.
look, i can't help ya that much about the vulkan thing. i am sure some low-spec machines don't support vulkan. you *could* use lavapipe (software renderer), but it doesn't work that well, even with the one simple change i discovered by just looking at the docs of the game. do check out your cpu though, maybe you have an ivy bridge or newer. those processors have support. not sure about amd cpus. i am really sure about amd gpus (gcn 1.0/1.1 being the oldest gpu type that is supported) so you're good. nvidia users have it hard (why fermi, why?!) i have an intel i3-3100m which is RIGHT at the ivy bridge category, so i am good. i also use arch linux, so i am way past good.
(this is the fun part: adding the fix. it's THAT simple!)
presto, now the lighting is reduced to the BareMinimum, making the game run smoother than ever.
with the lavapipe software renderer, my old tests of veloren through lavapipe were horrible: just 1 fps. a literal slideshow. that fix didn't exist back then! now with the fix, it runs at 8. still not good, but better. with my cpu as my default vulkan device, it ran at 20-35 fps without the fix, but with the fix, it runs at 60-70 fps! you can clearly see a night and day change right here.
that's all i have to say. stay cool, fellas!
