2021-09-29 - Squid Game (2021)

Usually, when I see "Netflix Korean TV Show", I tend to move away. But - mostly by laziness - this time I chose to click on the first largest thumbnail. My plugin adding various ratings to Netflix's UI said that it was actually pretty decent (8+ on IMDB at the time, if I recall correctly).

And it was, indeed, decent. The pitch is about in debt really desperate people who are being brought into an island to take part of a game. Of course, the reward includes a lot of money. There is only one little drawback, you have about one in five hundreds chance to win, otherwise you die.

The first part of the season is pretty solid. There are a lot of interaction between the characters. It explores how everyone relates to money in general, from the very poor to the rich guy who lost everything. It also let you discover the game world, and the non-players outfit with their PlayStation helmet, etc.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the first part. The second part and the ending, however... it's very long and sometimes doesn't make a lot of sense. The whole plot is kinda dumb to be honest. I finished it because I started the show and I wanted to know, but it looks like they put way more effort on the beginning to get you hooked.

The acting is pretty great, even if it seems kinda off in some scene. I think that's only because I'm not really used to Asian cinema in general, and the emotions are laid out differently.

To sum it up, I'd say that it's a good Netflix show to watch while doing else, if that's your thing.
