Eugen made a FAQ on Threads. Still no answer on whether they will federate with small servers or if theyâll have a limited allowlist.
I feel like all yay-sayers and the nay-sayers and the fence-sitters (that should cover just about everybody) are all looking pretty over-eager since the federation part is still completely vaporware.
And some weaker arguments like âWell, even if Threads abandoned ActivityPub down the line, where we would end up is exactly where we are now. XMPP did not exist on its own outside of nerd circles, while ActivityPub enjoys the support and brand recognition of Mastodon.â
Getting suddenly cut off from friends and fam is a disaster.
The pro-block side doesnât want the federation to begin and the anti-block side doesnât want it to end. Thatâs why the âthey might pull the plug at any timeâ is unsettling to both sides and an argument to seriously consider for everyone.
âWeâll end up exactly where we are nowâ.
Those that think that now is good donât wanna change it in the first place so thatâs a weird thing to say to try to placate them.
Those that think that now is a living nightmare are legitimately worried about the consequences of a sudden defederation.
And that includes me. Our greatest enemy, probably better known as the most evil corporation in the world, has suddenly laid down their arms and joined us in our federated ways. And I would want to be stoked about that. Itâs something Iâve longed for for close to twenty years. And to me, âbut the last time this happened, with XMPP, they were concealed carrying the whole time and when they have enough of a critical mass they betrayed usâ is a legit fear and âwe will be exactly where we are nowâ is the opposite of comfort.
The brand recognition of Jabber didnât help XMPPâit ultimately hindered it. đ€·đ»ââïž
Just like email had issues with sendmail as a âbrandâ (to the extent that an MTA can have name recognition) but email could eventually overcome those issues through peopleâs love of the protocol itself.
My plan is to try to federate if theyâll let me (and thatâs a big if. And Iâll block if it becomes impossible to moderate) so Iâm not part of the blocking pact, but Iâve been so disappointed in the arguments and conduct coming from the anti-block side.
And some from the pro-block side, too.
The vitriol is heartbreaking.

Looking for a writing app for iOS that supports plaintext, works offline, and has Emacs-like auto-fill and swedish-postfix input method, and autocapitalization.
I donât need syntax highlighting and stuff, Iâm just gonna write prose đ€·đ»ââïž
I donât need a minimal UI or outlining or anything like that either. I do that kinda structuring work on my desktop. None of the âI donât needâ stuff hurt, either, but Iâm just specifically looking for the swedish-postfix input method, I guess. Iâve never seen anything like that for iOS. Itâs the killer feature of Emacs.
On iOS, I can get Ă„ by alt-a, and dead umlaut dots with alt-u that can compose into Ă€ and ö with a and o respectively. Thatâs nice for shorter texts but for longer stuff I really miss Emacsâ automatic recognition of strings like aa for Ă„, ae for Ă€ and oe for ö.
I got Emacs itselfâand swedish-postfixâworking on iSH (a i686 emulator) but for some reason my autocapitalization elisp doesnât work. I need to debug it I guess đ€·đ»ââïž

The problem with Biden is that heâs too moderate already, and that his administration is drill crazy, handing out fracking permits like they were disco flyers in Berlin. Creating a âmoderateâ alternative to Biden and Trump is like proposing a compromise between getting both of our legs broken and getting killed. âHow about we break both of your arms, too, howâs that? Wouldnât that feel a lot nicer?â
We need climate action now. Leave it in the ground.

Maintainer of straight.el is working on a replacement called âelpacaâ; Iâm not an early adopter so Iâm sticking with straight for the forseeable but this is a note to self because once elpaca is all done & sorted, itâs gonna be time to move over. Straight.el is the savior of Emacs. Emacs wouldâve died without it.
Moget.
Iâm no fan of the corporate sites.
But the reasons why Iâm not fall into these two categories:
Normal timers are great at letting you do something for up to X minutes, letting you turn the timer off before it ends or altering you when the timer ends. For example: âIâll take a nap before the meeting. I wanna sleep for 20 minutes or less.â Itâll alert me when the 20 minutes are up, or let me quit out earlier ahead of time.
I wish reverse timers existed, for when I wanna do something for X minutes or more, as opposed to âor lessâ. Like, âI wanna work on this book for at least 30 minutes and not get out of the chair until Iâve spent at least 30 minutes writing.â A timer is super bad there because if Iâve been writing 30 minutes, I donât want it to ring, I wanna continue writing since Iâm finally in the zone. But I want the timer to stop me from leaving before the 30 minutes without being noticable when it does end. Sand timers can be pretty good for this since they peter out so gradually and unsuddenly. But they still require me to occasionally glance at them, unlike a normal timer which lets me focus fully and completely stop worrying about the time because I know the timer will ring. Sometimes Iâve also used a playlist with a subtle shift (like, say it switches from Glenn Gould to Kimiko Ishizaka) but thatâs also something that not as fully out-of-mind as a normal timer is.
(Yes I hate đ )
Isnât this advice a liâl contradictory?
âIf you canât fall asleep after 20-30 minutes, get out of bed and engage in a relaxing activity until you feel sleepy. Avoid clock-watching as it can create anxiety about not falling asleep.â

What Iâve found in dealing with the hoity-toity is that thereâs a large degree of Postel-ness around all the politeness rules. âMannersâ are there for your benefitâtheyâre more about being considerate to others rather than being annoyed at them for breaches. Theyâre not supposed to be gotchas and traps and mines.

Congratulations, Mark! One of my fave designers of all time, not only for his own design innovations (although some of them, like lenticular design, are pretty darn amazing) but for how well he explains and teaches his own process. Heâs up there, not only with other great game designers like Sackson, Randolph, and Knizia, but with other great designers period, like Dieter Rams or Gerrit Rietveld.
Iâve often wished he worked on a game I liked more than Magic, which is proprietary and often wasteful. Heâs been a great (and always self-relfecting and improving) steward of it for decades now. I can only dream of what he could have done with an open source and nomic game like D&D.

I wish I had seen this years ago since building EDH decks cannbe so daunting. This makes it easy.
The deck wonât be very good but itâll get done, and my advice is that once you start playtesting and tweaking you should throw out this theory. It helps you get the 99 together easily and with clarity & confidence, and them once you have that, just forget that you used it and go back to swapping cards 1-for-1 as your testing shows.

Treeantmonkâs houserules:
1. Ban Shield spell
2. Restrictions on casting in armor
3. When making weapon attacks with specifically the âAttack actionâ you can optionally take -5 to hit for +10 damage.
The first two are meaningless for use since theyâre meant to nerf multiclassing and we already have more severe nerfs to multiclassing in place. But Iâm eyeing that third one.
We already have hundreds of other house rules. I love the nomic quality of D&D, how the game can grow and change with the group.

Most of the posts on the flagship right now seem to be from Lemmy. Itâs a little fiddlier to interact with than vanilla Lemmy since instead of a direct link to the fedi url (that I can run share sheet shortcuts on) itâs a âcopy fedi URLâ javascript thing that I need to manually paste into my instance.
