The cotton-swab of pleasantries quickly clears a space,
As the hand of good intention closes around the injector.
The needle breaks skin, and presses,
But delivers no medicine; it is empty.
Content with this salve-less salvo, the hand withdraws
And this time forgets to offer a band-aid
To the many-dotted arms
Of its long-numbed patient.
