I'm not gonna get into an argument with anyone but sudden reduction in meat consumption is not going to have the environmental or welfare benefits usually behind these movements. The second farmers cannot make money from livestock they'll simply cut their losses and cull. Lots of none consumed dead animals is not great evironmentally nor has it prevented animal deaths. I don't know about the rest of Europe either but I've never seen a wild cow, sheep or pig in my life. Any surviving members of those species would exist in small farm zoos getting stared at in captivity for their whole life. Foid production and supply needs to be less wasteful for sure but a gradual reduction is going to be better for all.

I have a feeling the effects of climate change during the next couple of decades will be the force majeure that will necessitate many changes in food production, whether anyone wants it or not. Forcing a change through laws will be difficult as it goes against market forces, traditions, and general human behavior.

@skyjake you're probably right unforunately I don't hold much hope for the planet. For all of our innovation we're a very arrogant and rather unintelligent species despite what we'd like to believe.

I agree that a gradual reduction is best, however if done at a measured pace, banning modern factory farming and mandating better living conditions for animals will result in higher meat prices and therefore lower consumption, as well as more ethical food production practices.

My first motivation for not eating meat and animal products in general is of respect and love towards animals. I wanted to stop being an active part of the gigantic machine of animal slavery and suffering. There are environmental benefits, there are health benefits too, but I consider those as byproducts. I don't think any petition will put farmers out of business, even though I would be happy to subsidize their future unemployment (current EU subsidies to the meat and dairy industry will suffice for many generations, I think).

In my experience, laws and regulations are surprisingly effective at convincing people to abandon their habits.
