The world outside Rob's capsule has been quite busy recently. One way I like to unwind from the bustle is by watching badminton, and this week happens to be the Yonex All-England Open, the oldest and probably most prestigious badminton tournament in the world.
My team of preference is Team Japan. At time of writing, Japan has players still in the running in all 5 categories, and the men's doubles pair of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi just completed a nail-biting match against home favorites Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. In fact, in women's singles, my personal favorite Akane Yamaguchi is slated to play against fellow Japanese athlete Sayaka Takahashi.
Though I've followed badminton for over a year and a half now, this is the first time I've been watching matches live. Many tournaments are held in south or east Asia, and thus take place in the middle of night in American timezones. I tend to watch replays later, but based on the length of the match, it's easy to tell if the match consisted of three or two games--and if only two games happened, it's obvious that whoever won the first game took the other. Watching live means the outcome can't be known until the end, which makes the match much more suspenseful to watch.
