A FORMER Limerick U21 hurler and a senior research fellow at the
University of Limerick have received Fulbright scholarships to the
United States.
Dr Lukas O’Brien and Dr Olwyn Mahon will both be heading to the US as
part of being awarded with the scholarships.
The Fulbright program is known for selecting candidates from across the
island of Ireland to study and work with US institutions across all
disciplines ranging from health, science, technology and business to
the arts and culture.
As the Fulbright Awardees forge ahead on these exciting opportunities,
the breadth of their US engagement is diverse and impressive.
A total of 37 people across the country were awarded for 2023-24.
Recipients were presented with awards at a ceremony in the US
ambassador’s residence.

Dr Lukas O'Brien is a core surgical trainee in plastic and
reconstructive surgery. He also won an U21 All Ireland hurling
championship in 2015.
As a Fulbright awardee, he will attend Yale University.
Dr Olwyn Mahon is a senior research fellow in the Faculty of Science
and Engineering at the University of Limerick.
Her PhD focused on developing immunomodulatory implantable scaffolds
for enhanced regeneration of bone defects.
Her current research focuses on the development of representative in
vitro model systems of metastatic urological cancers.
