Derry Court: Man became 'rowdy and aggressive' following arrest for assault of female

Paddy Leonard, 15 Jun

A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today

charged with assaulting a female, assault on a police officer and

attempted criminal damage to a police vehicle.

James Smith (23) of Duddy's Court in Derry faces three charges that

were said to have occurred on June 14.

The court heard that police were called to a report of an assault on a

female in Duddy's Court.

Police spoke to a female who had two black eyes and swelling on her

face.

She said she had been drinking with others when a female, Smith's

girlfriend, assaulted her and then encouraged Smith to attack her.

She said Smith threatened to get a dog lead and strangle her and stamp

on her face.

When Smith was arrested he became rowdy and aggressive and was alleged

to have kicked the back window of a police vehicle.

The court heard that Smith was in breach of bail on two charges.

A police officer said that the proposed address was not deemed suitable

as threats had been directed at that house.

Bail was refused and Smith was remanded in custody to appear again on

June 22.
