Internet Archive Finds Vol. 1

2022-03-07

I've been finding a lot of good and interesting music on archive.org lately and I think I'll do a short and sporadic series of gemlog posts to share some of the cool stuff I've found.

This first one is going to be mostly surf music because that's what I've been into lately.

Here are four classic 60s surf bands that are maybe a bit more unknown than the big groups, a surf band from more recent times and a cool retro music podcast. These albums form the 60s seem to be a gray area of archive.org. The albums are not in the public domain but these vinyl rips are available for free download.

The Centurions (The Centurians?) - Surfers' Pajama Party/Bullwinkle Part II

A good classic surf album with the title song Bullwinkle Part II being one of the tracks on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.

The Cornells - Beach Bound

The Cornells are another less well-known surf band from the 60s. This is their one and only album.

The Glaciers - From Sea to Ski

Guess what, another 60s surf music band with one album. The Glaciers are a little unique because they have a cold weather theme going on.

The Marauders - Maraudin' 65

The Marauders - Check in with Supertorque

The Marauders have two quite rare albums because only a small number were pressed and never gained much popularity. They have that classic surf sound though and I enjoy them.

Monsters From Mars - Play Some Originals And Some Surf Guitar Classics And Obscurities

Monsters From Mars - 2004: A Space Odyssey

Monsters From Mars are a surf band from the early 00s and these were home releases put out without any record label. One of them even says it was released on CD-Rs by the band directly :-D.

Retro Obscuro Podcast

Retro Obscuro Podcast Archives

This is my one pick that is not surf music. Ok, I guess I can't guarantee there won't be an occasional surf track that comes up on this really cool podcast but it is not surf themed overall. Retro Obscuro is a still ongoing radio show/podcast hosted by Kitschy Mama from WFMU in New York. It is a show of rare and obscure music from the 50s and 60s interspersed with clips of strange old commercials. All of the past episodes are available for listening or download on archive.org!
