English Woman Wakes Up Speaking in a French Accent

British accent her whole life. One day, she fell asleep after experiencing a

migraine, and when she woke up, she was uncontrollably speaking with what

sounded like a French accent. Crazy, right? It's actually not as unbelievable

as you might think.

After paying a visit to the neurologist, she was finally diagnosed with Foreign

Accent Syndrome, an extremely rare condition that damages the part of the brain

that controls speech and word formation. It is thought to be caused by stroke

or damage to the brain, with symptoms of paralyzed limbs and slurred speech.

The condition can last for an indefinite amount of time, and there is currently

no known cure.

The bizarre disease was first discovered in World War II when a woman from

Norway experienced head injury during an air raid. She suffered brain damage

and developed a strong German accent in 1941. Since then, about 60 cases have

been reported. Just this past March Sarah Colwill, another English woman, lost

her accent when she woke up with a Chinese one that evolved into an Eastern

European speech a week later.

Since January 2010, Russell still has not spoken with her natural accent and

would very much like it back. In an interview with BBC, she said, "I think I

will put an advertisement in the lost and found because at the end of the day,

maybe someone can find me."

Very little research has been done for Foreign Accent Syndrome since it is so

uncommon. To raise awareness and help support people like Russell who are in

disarray and suffer from a lack of identity with the unfamiliar sound coming
