The bare trunk, branches, and stems of a leafless red maple dominate the left side of the image, with many of the branches casting shadows on the white trunk. The upper half of the trunk is in full shadow, and the edge of the shadow lines up near perfectly with the top edge of the cloud in the background, which fills the bottom half of the image, and runs at an angle, rising up to the right across the frame. Above the cloud is blue sky, and the tops of 4 pine trees are seen in the background, at the bottom of the image.
