---------------------------------------[CTRL-S PAUSES/SPACE=QUIT]S STOPS/STARTS--SPACE ABORTS$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $ THE STILL $ --- ----- $ $ AN ARTICLE FROM THE BOOK: $ $ THE POOR MAN'S JAMSSBOND $ BY KURT SAXON $ $ $ TYPED AND UPLOADED BY: $ $$$$$$$-=>LEX LUTHOR<=-$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ IN A PHEW PHILES ON THIS SYSTEM SOMEOF THE RECIPES NEED A STILL, WELL HEREIS HOW TO MAKE A STILL: ONCE YOU GET THE CHEMICALS, INGREDIENTS, OR WHAT EVER, YOU SET UP YOURSTILL. IT IS SMALL, EFFICIENT, ANDSAFE. IN IT YOU CAN MAKE THINGS LIKETEAR GAS, PRUSSIC ACIDE AND OCCASIONALYDISTILL SOME ALCOHOL. FIRST, A FLASK IS FITTED WITH AONE-HOLW RUBBER STOPPER. A SHORT LENGTHOF THIN GLASS TUBING IS INSERTED INTOTHE HOLE. A FIVE FOOT LENGTH OF THINRUBBER TUBING IS FITTED OVER THE GLASSTUBE AND COILED INTO THE ICE BUCKET ANDOUT THROUGH A HOLE NEAR THE BOTTOM. THEEND OF THE TUBE IS FITTED OVER ANOTHERGLASS TUBE HICH IS IN A TWO-HOLE STOPPER STUCK INTO A BOTTLE. THE OTHER HOLECONTAINS ANOTHER GLASS TUBE TO WHCC ISATTACHED ANOTHER LENGTH OF TUBING LONGENOUGH TO REACH OUTSIDE TO GET RID OFANY NOXIOUS OR POISONOUS FUME.. THE EQUIPMENT FOR A STILL IS CHEAPAND SIMPLE TO GET. MOST OF IT CAN BEBOUGHT FROM YOUR LOCAL DRUG STORE.HEY CARRY TUBING, STOPPERS, GLASSWAREAND MANY CHEMICALS WHICH THEY FREELYSELL TO DOCTORS, STUDENTS ETC. IF YUET ON GOOD TERMS WITH YOUR DRUGGISTAND HE DOESN'T KNOW YOU ARE CRAZY YOUCAN BUY MOST OF YOUR STUPH FROM HIM. A RING STAND OR TRIPOD FOR THE FLASKIS MORE HANDY THAN THE CAN IN THEILLUSTRATION (SEE BELOW). BUT A TIN CANWITH STRIPS CUT OUT OF IT FOR VENTILATION AND FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE LAMP ISUSUALLY ADEQUATE.CHECKLIST OF EQUIPMENT:<1> ALCOHOL LAMP.<2> RING STAND, TRIPOD OR TIN CAN.<3> 500 ML OR LARGER FLASK<4> ASSORTMENT OF ONE AND TWO-HOLE HOLELESS RUBBER STOPPERS OF VARIOUS SIZES.<5> ABOUT SIX YARDS OF 3/16 OF AN INCH (INSIDE DIAMETER) RUBBER TUBING.<6> ABOUT A FOOT OF SIX MILLIMETER (OUTSIDE DIAMETER) LABORATORY GLASS TUBIN.<7> CHILD'S PLASTIC BUCKET<8> RECEIVING BOTTLE. THE HOLE IN THE BUCKET FOR THE TUBEIS MADE SOMEWHAT SMALLER THAN THE TUBESO IT WILL FIT SNUGLY AND PREVENTLEAKAGE. FULL STRENGTH WOOD ALCOHOL FORTHE LAMP CAN BE BOUGHT AT THE DRUG STORE. RUBBING ALCOHOL, ALTHOUGH 30% WATERWILL BURN IN THE LAMP BUT NOT SO WEL.YOU CAN DISTILL THE PURT ALCOHOL OFFTHE WATER FROM RUBBING ALCOHOL. THIS IS BEST DONE OVER A GAS ORELECTRIC STOVE. FIRST A LARGE PAN WITHA COUPLE OF INCHES OF WATER IN IT ISPUT ON THE BURNER TO BE USED NN THEOTHERS ARE TURNED OFF. THE STILL IS SET UP AS THE ILLUSTRATION EXCEPT THE RECEIVING BOTTLE ISLARGER AND DOESN'T NEED A STOPPER ORTUBE GOING OUTSIDE. THE FLASK IS FILLEDWITH RUBBING ALCOHOL TO JUST UNDER THENECK AND SET IN TEH PAN OF BOILINGWATER. IN THIS SETUP A COATHANGER WIREWITH A LOOP IN ITS MIDDLE IS PUT OVERTHE NECK OF THE FLASK AND FIXED ON THESIDES OF THE PAN. THIS IS NECESSARYBECAUSE AS THE ALCOHOL DISTILLS OFF,TEEFLASK GETS LIGHTER ANDB WOULD RISEIN THE WATER AND FALL OVER WITHOUTSUPPORT. ANOTHER CONSIDERATION IS TO MAKESURE THE TUBE DOES NOT FLOP OVER ANDCOLLAPSE. THIS CAN BE PREVENTED BYHANGING A STRING FROM THE CEILING BWHICH THE TUBING IS HELD ABOVE THEFLASK. THE TUBING SHOULD BE FURTHER SUPPORTED SO IT DOES NOT TOUCH THE HOT EDGEOF THE PAN. IF IT IS ALLOWED TO LIEOVER THE EDGE IT WILL MELT. WHEN THE ACTION STARTS THE ALCOHOLWILL FAIRLY FLOW INTO THE COLLECTINGBOTTLE. WHEN IT STOPS ALL THAT IS EFTIN THE FLASK WILL BE WATER. IF LEFTALONE WATER WOULD START DRIPPING, MUCHSLOWER THAN THE ALCOHOL, BUT THIS ISNOT WANTED. THIS IS THE ONLY CASE WHERE YOUSHOULD DISTILL OVER A STOVE. A STOVEIS HARDER TO CONTROL THAN AN ALCOHOLLAMP. IT IS ALSO HARDER TO CLEAN UPTHAN A TABLE IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. ILLUSTRATION ---->-- ! !================= ! ! % <-FLASK ------- TO % !->! ! *!
